Elijah McCain was a 23 year old black man who had been working as a licensed massage therapist for four years. He was self-taught the violin and the guitar. Formerly from Denver, Co., Elijah and his family had moved to Aurora to avoid violence and gang activity. One of his favorite pastimes was to either go to the animal shelter or just go to where stray cats hung out, and play violin for them — because he believed it soothed them.
